About Maya Fakhrriddine

Hi, I’m Maya Fakhrriddine (Fak-ri-deen).

I’m a first-generation Lebanese-American painter in San Diego. I make textured abstract paintings in plaster, acrylic and oil for people who want what’s on their walls to say something true about them.

When I was fifteen, I walked with my dad every day after school. On one of those walks I told him I wanted to give my art a real try. He didn’t say no. He said school first.

So I studied graphic design, then became a certified project manager in facilities and engineering. The largest project I closed out was $27 million. Years later, a few weeks after my daughter was born, I drew her name in my old bedroom at my parents’ house. It wasn’t the best thing I’d ever made, but it felt like getting part of myself back. I started painting professionally in 2022.

WHAT THE WORK HOLDS

I grew up between two cultures and spent years trying to fit in. Now I believe the things you choose to live with should reflect who you actually are. You don’t need a full wall. One piece chosen with care is enough.

My faith is at the center of how I work. Some series draw from Arabic letterforms and Quranic references. The Abjad series starts with Nuqta, the dot, and moves through Alef, Ba, Wow and Noon. Alef won Best in Show at Ashton Gallery’s “Out of the Blue” exhibition in 2024. Much of my work also comes from a question I’ve carried since I was sixteen: what stays true when life changes without warning?

WHY PLASTER

I build my paintings up in plaster because raised surfaces catch light differently through the day. A painting that reaches out toward you asks you to stop for a moment. Painting is how I get fully present, and I hope the work gives you some of that too.

When I'm not painting, you'll find me:

going for walks in Balboa Park or Seaport Village with my family,

trying out different boutique coffee shops,

and having the time of my life being her mother!
